Getting a tattoo removed is a process, and after each session, how you care for your skin plays a major role in your results and recovery. At Inklifters, we want each of our clients to see the best possible outcome with minimal discomfort, risk, or scarring. That’s why proper aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself.
Whether you’ve just had your first session or are partway through the process, below are essential aftercare tips to help your skin heal beautifully and efficiently.
Why Is Tattoo Removal Aftercare So Important?
Laser tattoo removal works by breaking down the ink particles of unwanted tattoos in your skin, allowing your body’s immune system to flush them out over time. Because the laser also creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, your body needs support during the healing process. Your Laser Technician will provide you with specific laser tattoo removal aftercare instructions after each treatment session.
Proper aftercare for laser tattoo removal can help:
- Reduces the risk of infection
- Minimizes scabbing, blistering, and scarring
- Support faster fading of the tattoo
- Keep your skin healthy and resilient between sessions
Immediately After Your Session
You may experience some redness, swelling, or a sunburn-like sensation during the healing process, which is completely normal. Below are some do’s and don’s for the first 24-48 hours post treatment:
DO:
- Apply a cold compress. This helps soothe discomfort and reduce swelling.
- Keep the treated area clean and dry. Gently cleanse with mild soap and water if needed.
- Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor, or other recommended healing ointment from your provider, and cover with a non-stick bandace. Keeping the area moisturized can help reduce inflammation and itching, and covering the area with a non-stick bandaid helps protect the treated area from infection.
- Avoid friction, heat, and pressure. Your skin is delicate and vulnerable after laser tattoo removal. Avoiding fiction, heat, and pressure can ensure proper healing and minimize complications.
DON’T:
- Pick at scabs or pop any blisters. This can lead to scarring.
- Submerge the area in water. No baths, pools, or hot tubs will minimize unwanted complications, such as infections
- Apply makeup or skincare products to the treated area, unless directed. Makeup and some skincare products can irritate the treated area, clog pores, and hinder your skin’s healing process.
Ongoing Healing (Days 2–14)
As your skin continues to heal, you may notice flaking, itching, or minor scabbing on the treated area. This is all a part of the healing process. It’s important to resist the urge to scratch or exfoliate because it can lead to scarring, infection, and delayed healing.
Key Aftercare Tips:
- Moisturize daily. Use a gentle, fragrance-free lotion (or as directed by your provider) once scabs have formed and the area begins to feel dry to reduce itching.
- Protect the skin from sun exposure. Your skin becomes more sensitive and susceptible to sunburn after any laser treatment. Use an SPF 30 or higher and cover the area with clothing when outdoors.
- Avoid intense workouts, saunas, or hot yoga for at least 48 hours. Intense workouts and such cause excessive sweating, which can lead to skin irritation and infection post laser tattoo removal.
