Picosecond laser systems deploy ultra-short picosecond pulses of energy to the skin to remove tattoo. These short pulses from the laser create a photomechanical effect called PressureWave™.
How does PressureWave work? It breaks ink into tiny, dust-like particles that the body can easily eliminate. Picosecond lasers are able to target dark inks while avoiding surrounding unmarked skin tissue.
Picosecond technology is different than the Q-switched lasers that have been used for years in laser tattoo removal. Q-Switched lasers essentially heat up the tissue to remove ink particles—leaving the skin irritated, scarred, and burned.
Q-switched lasers require longer light pulses and leave larger particles of ink. As a result, Q-switched lasers require more sessions, which are longer and more painful. See the photos below for how Q-switched lasers and the Picosecond based lasers break up ink.
